On May 24, 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge opened to the public. Here’s a look at images of the bridge and the surrounding city in its first decades, from the archives of the Library of Congress.

The USS Maine passes under the Brooklyn Bride, c. 1896. The sinking of the Maine in Havana Harbor in 1898 — and the rallying cry “Remember the Maine” — would propel the country into the Spanish-American War.
