A beautifully colorised photograph of Matt McGrath from Nenagh, County Tipperary.

He was an NYPD officer and won the Olympic hammer title at the 1912 Games in Stockholm. The record he set on that day lasted a remarkable 24 years. He was known as the ‘Prince of Whales’. The Irish Whales were an incredible group of athetes who were all Irish born and members of the NYPD. Between them they won 18 Olympic medals. (photo from my book ‘The Irish Whales: Olympians of Old New York’).
